When Is the Best Time to Visit Charlotte?

The best time of year to visit and run in Charlotte is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring. There are more than 100 running races each year in Charlotte, and most of them are scheduled during this timeframe.

Once summer hits, the heat and humidity challenge runners. If you visit between June and August and go for a run, slow your pace, hydrate properly, and avoid peak daytime temperatures.

Running in Charlotte

Charlotte could easily be nicknamed “the run club city” with the number of organized runs each week. There are many miles of greenways in and around the city making it easy to stay active when visiting or living here. For those who prefer trail running, there are several options nearby, including Anne Springs Close Greenway, Colonel Francis J. Beatty Park, and the trails within the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

Anne Springs Close Greenway
While the Anne Springs Close Greenway is geographically located in Fort Mill, South Carolina, it’s less than a 30-minute drive south of Charlotte. It’s a great place to trail run, with 36 miles of trails and markers every quarter-mile. Consider jumping on the 7.2-mile (one-way) Blue Star Trail from the Blue Star Entrance, or at the halfway point at the Dairy Barn Entrance. This trail extends most of the length of the park and wraps around part of Lake Haigler. View the full trail map here.

After your run, hang out at the Gateway Canteen to refuel and enjoy one of the most idyllic places in the Charlotte area. Other activities on site include kayaking, paddle boarding, mountain biking, horseback riding, and scheduled yoga classes. Dogs are allowed and must be on a leash. Note that there is a daily entrance fee.

Little Sugar Creek Greenway
The Little Sugar Creek Greenway is a city greenway path that has multiple starting points along its 19 miles. The trail runs north to south, past numerous parks and along the east side of downtown Charlotte, until it reaches the South Carolina border.

Consider starting from the Tyvola Road entrance (2524 Tyvola Road, Charlotte). From here, run north toward NoDa to check out the Charlotte skyline. On this route, you’ll experience Uptown and the popular NoDa neighborhood. Check out different starting points and route options here.

Four Mile Creek Greenway at Piper Glen
Park at the Four Mile Creek Greenway parking lot (5803 Bevington Place, Charlotte) or at the Starbucks (6432 Rea Road, Charlotte) just across the street from the trailhead. Starbucks is a favorite meeting spot for several weekend run clubs, and many runners hang out afterward on the patio overlooking the greenway. You can get up to 12 miles on this out-and-back shaded greenway, which connects to Lower McAlpine Creek Greenway and McMullen Creek Greenway. View the trail map here.

Rail Trail
Park at The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (4150 Yancey Road, Charlotte) and head out onto the Rail Trail that runs alongside the light rail tracks. Run north through the booming South End neighborhood and into Uptown. You’ll pass dozens of breweries and enjoy some of the best views of Charlotte. Get up to 10 miles on this out-and-back route before returning for a beer and a bite to eat at the brewery.

U.S. National Whitewater Center
Head out to the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) to run more than 40 miles of trails on the property. USNWC is a top destination for Charlotte-area visitors, and you can easily make it a full-day adventure with whitewater rafting, kayaking, ziplining, and attempting a ropes course. There are multiple food and beverage options on-site for refueling, and plenty of trail races and concerts scheduled throughout the year.

Check out the full USNWC trail system map. The 1.6-mile Lake Loop allows dogs off-leash; check details here. There’s no fee to use the trail system but other activities require the purchase of a pass.

As with any running route, take the necessary precautions for a safe run. Whenever possible, run with a buddy. Tell someone you know where you’re going and when you expect to return, bring your cell phone and an ID, and remain aware of your surroundings.
